Where? In the beautiful Nenthorn Valley, Macraes, Palmerston, South Island, New Zealand
When? 2021 (to be advised)

About the event ...
The New Zealand National Endurance Championships is one of three championship events held in New Zealand each year, the others being the North Island and South Island Championships. The National Championship rides alternate between the North and South Islands each year. They form part of the Federation Equestrian Internationale (FEI) Series, a hotly contested national competition. All Endurance Championship events are run under the regulations of the FEI, the world governing body for equestrian sports. These regulations require the appointment of internationally qualified Officials and Veterinarians.

For this event we will have personnel from abroad taking up key positions as well as some highly qualified personnel from within the sport in New Zealand, making this a truly international event. With the rapid growth within the sport, especially in the South Island, we are anticipating that the event will attract competitors from throughout the country as well as from Australia and further abroad.

The 2021 New Zealand National Endurance and CTR Championships is a three-day event which includes
competitions of:

Endurance: CEI and CEN 160 km classes for Seniors and Juniors; CEI and CEN 120 km classes for Seniors and Juniors; CEI and CEN 100 km classes for Seniors and Juniors; CEI and CEN 80 km classes for Seniors and Juniors; and CEN 64 and 40 km classes for Seniors and Juniors.

CTR: CTR Open 64 km for Seniors and Juniors; CTR Intermediate 40 km for Seniors and Juniors; and CTR Novice 25 km for Seniors and Juniors.

About Endurance Riding ...
Endurance Riding is an equestrian sport based on controlled long-distance races up 160 km (100 miles). It is one of the fastest growing Equestrian Sports in the world with over 70 participating nations worldwide.

Endurance is one of the few sports where men and women can compete alongside each other with equal opportunities, from introductory level right through to World Championship level. It's a sport for all—the whole family can compete together, with adults riding alongside children.

In a nutshell, the horse with the fastest ride time which meets the “fit to continue” criteria, determined by a veterinary panel, is the winner.

Horse Welfare is the highest priority in endurance. The horses are checked by registered veterinarians before a ride, throughout the ride, at predetermined checkpoints, and on completion. Each ride has mandatory rest periods for the horses throughout the rides, however, if at any time the horse is judged to be unsound or metabolically unfit to continue, it will be withdrawn from the ride and fail to qualify.

About Competitive Trail Riding (CTR) ...
CTR is a scored event based on riding (in classes up to 75 km), within an optimum time, and finishing on a sound horse with the horse’s heart rate being as low as possible. Family participation is encouraged in CTR, and it provides opportunities for all riders to encounter and rise to new challenges while enjoying some of New Zealand’s most amazing countryside.

13 December 2020 - Canterbury Barrel Racing Jackpots

The Canterbury Barrel Racing Jackpots is into its 5th season and is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. They've hosted 3 “Have a Go” tuition days over winter and are now underway with their first of seven, 2020 season Jackpots. The majority of their competitors come from North Canterbury and Christchurch, with fewer coming from South Canterbury and the West Coast.

With a growing following—and with more English and pleasure riders turning up to participate in these fun days—they've created a season membership so that the less competitive riders may still accumulate season points and be in the running for awards at prize giving. This exciting equine sport embraces all horses and riders!

Most excitingly, the Canterbury Barrel Racing Jackpots will be hosting their very first ‘South Island Barrel Racing Finals’ in March 2021—inviting the top 4 Senior and Junior riders from each of the 3 SI clubs to battle it out for the Champion buckle.

The following awards will be given out at their CBRJ season finals and South Island Finals:

  • Barrel Horse of the Year
  • Horsemanship Award
  • 1st Division Barrel Racing Champion
  • 2nd Division Barrel Racing Champion
  • Junior Barrel Racing Champion (13-18 yrs)
  • Pee Wee Barrel Racing Champion (3-12 yrs)
  • Pole Bending Champion
  • Junior Pole Bending Champion (3-13 yrs)

What is Barrel Racing?

In a nutshell, Barrel Racing (Open & Second Division) is a female only event. The objective of a Barrel Racing run is to ride a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels as quickly as possible. The time starts when the barrel racer crosses electronic timers on her horse.

  • Open and Second Division Barrel Race Event is open to Female contestants only. (Junior event may be Female or Male - see notes below)
  • Contestants must run in a Clover Leaf Pattern
  • Western dress & equipment must be used (Open & Second Division)
  • All equipment and how it is used must be in keeping with the NZRCA rules and regulations.
  • Fastest qualified time wins the event
  • Contestants can only run the course once (no re-runs are permitted)

After crossing the start line the contestant heads for the first barrel and makes a sharp turn around it. She then heads for the second barrel and after another sharp turn around that, she heads for the third. After a final sharp turn around the third barrel she heads directly for home as fast as possible. With each turn around the barrel the contestant must cross over their own tracks. The run is complete and the clock stopped when the contestant crosses the finish line and breaks the beam of the electronic timers that started the run. The fastest qualified time wins the event.
